Large-scaled Carplet

Amblypharyngodon grandisquamis

The Large-scaled Carplet is a small freshwater fish native to Sri Lanka, found mainly in lowland freshwater habitats such as streams, ponds, marshes, and slow-moving waters. It is recognized by its relatively large scales compared to other small cyprinid fishes and its slender, silvery body. This peaceful schooling fish prefers areas with aquatic vegetation, where it can find shelter and food. It feeds mainly on algae, plant matter, small insects, and tiny aquatic organisms. The Large-scaled Carplet is an important native species in Sri Lanka’s freshwater ecosystems, especially in wetland environments, where it contributes to the diversity and stability of aquatic communities.
