Blue Laubuca

Chela ceylonensis

The Blue Laubuca is a small freshwater fish endemic to Sri Lanka, occurring in clear rivers and forest streams of the island’s wet zone. It prefers clean, slow to moderately flowing waters with dense riparian vegetation, where it spends most of its time swimming near the surface in schools. Its slender, laterally compressed body and bluish-silver sheen make it easy to recognize, while its reddish lips give rise to one of its Sinhala names. The species feeds mainly on small aquatic insects, insect larvae, zooplankton, and other tiny invertebrates collected from the water surface. As a species found only in Sri Lanka, the Blue Laubuca is an important component of the country's endemic freshwater fish fauna and depends on the protection of healthy forest stream ecosystems.
