Sinhala Barb

Dawkinsia singhala (Puntius singhala)

The Sinhala Barb is a freshwater fish endemic to Sri Lanka, found in rivers, streams, and freshwater habitats across the island. It is commonly associated with clear, flowing waters where rocky substrates, submerged plants, and shaded areas provide shelter. This active and social species often moves in groups and feeds on algae, plant matter, small aquatic insects, and other organic material. Mature males may develop brighter body colours and longer fin extensions during the breeding season. As a fish unique to Sri Lanka, the Sinhala Barb plays an important role in maintaining the biodiversity of the island’s freshwater ecosystems.
