Common Labeo
Labeo dussumieri
The Common Labeo is a large freshwater carp native to Sri Lanka and southern India. In Sri Lanka, it is found in rivers, streams, reservoirs, and large freshwater lakes, particularly in well-oxygenated waters with rocky, sandy, or gravelly bottoms. It is a strong swimmer that prefers open river channels and deeper pools, where it forages close to the bottom. This species is primarily an omnivorous bottom feeder, grazing on algae, aquatic plants, detritus, and small aquatic invertebrates. Its specialized mouth is adapted for scraping algae and organic material from rocks and submerged surfaces. Juveniles often form small schools, while larger adults are more commonly found alone or in loose groups. In Sri Lanka, the Common Labeo is an important native freshwater fish, contributing to the ecological balance of rivers and reservoirs by helping control algal growth and recycle organic matter. It is also valued as a food fish and forms part of the island’s rich native cyprinid diversity.
