Green Labeo

Labeo fisheri

The Green Labeo is a freshwater fish endemic to Sri Lanka, found mainly in rivers and streams of the island’s wet zone. It inhabits clear, flowing waters with rocky or gravel substrates, submerged vegetation, and well-oxygenated conditions. This species is adapted to life in river environments, where it uses its strong swimming ability to navigate moderate currents. The Green Labeo is mainly a herbivorous and omnivorous feeder, grazing on algae, plant material, and organic matter attached to rocks and submerged surfaces, while also consuming small aquatic organisms when available. Like other labeo species, it plays an important ecological role by controlling algae growth and recycling nutrients within freshwater habitats. As a species found only in Sri Lanka, the Green Labeo is an important part of the island’s unique freshwater biodiversity. Its survival depends on the protection of clean river habitats, as pollution, habitat modification, and changes in natural water flow can threaten its populations.
