Orange-fin Labeo
Labeo lankae
The Orange-fin Labeo is a freshwater fish endemic to Sri Lanka, found mainly in rivers and streams of the island’s wet zone and intermediate regions. It prefers clear, well-oxygenated waters with rocky or sandy bottoms, moderate currents, and areas with submerged vegetation. This species is well adapted to river environments, using its strong body and fins to maintain position in flowing waters. The Orange-fin Labeo is mainly a herbivorous and omnivorous feeder, feeding on algae, aquatic plants, detritus, and small aquatic organisms found on rocks and submerged surfaces. It plays an important ecological role by grazing on algae and helping recycle organic material within freshwater ecosystems. As a fish found only in Sri Lanka, the Orange-fin Labeo is a valuable component of the island’s native freshwater biodiversity. Protection of natural river habitats is important for its survival, as habitat degradation, pollution, and changes in water flow can negatively affect its populations.
