Bandula Barb

Pethia bandula (Puntius bandula)

The Bandula Barb is a small freshwater fish endemic to Sri Lanka, known from a very limited range in the island’s wet zone. It inhabits clear, shallow forest streams with slow to moderate water flow, sandy or gravel bottoms, and dense vegetation along the stream banks. This peaceful schooling fish prefers sheltered habitats where it can feed on algae, small insects, and tiny aquatic organisms. Males display more intense colours during the breeding season, while females are generally larger and less brightly coloured. Due to its restricted distribution and dependence on clean freshwater habitats, the Bandula Barb is considered an important species for the conservation of Sri Lanka’s unique freshwater biodiversity.
