Cuming’s Barb
Pethia cumingii (Puntius cumingii)
The Cuming’s Barb is a small freshwater fish endemic to Sri Lanka, primarily found in streams and rivers of the island’s wet zone. It inhabits clear, slow-moving waters with aquatic plants, submerged roots, and leaf litter, where it forms small groups for protection. This active and peaceful schooling fish feeds on algae, small insects, and tiny aquatic organisms. During breeding, males develop brighter reddish-orange coloration, while females are usually larger and less colorful. The Cuming’s Barb is an important part of Sri Lanka’s freshwater biodiversity and is also appreciated internationally as an ornamental aquarium species due to its attractive appearance and peaceful behaviour.
