Black Ruby Barb

Pethia nigrofasciata (Puntius nigrofasciatus)

The Black Ruby Barb is a small freshwater fish endemic to Sri Lanka, mainly found in the clear, shaded streams and forest waterways of the island’s wet zone, especially in the southwestern regions. It prefers slow-flowing streams with dense vegetation, rocky areas, and leaf-covered bottoms where it can find shelter and food. This peaceful schooling fish is known for its striking dark body coloration, with males developing deep black and reddish-purple tones during the breeding season. It feeds on small aquatic insects, algae, and plant material. The Black Ruby Barb is highly valued in the international aquarium trade and is considered one of Sri Lanka’s most attractive endemic freshwater fishes.
