Cherry Barb
Pethia titteya
The Cherry Barb is a small freshwater fish endemic to Sri Lanka, found mainly in the shaded streams and tributaries of the Kelani and Nilwala River basins, as well as several other wet zone rivers. It prefers slow-moving, clear waters with sandy or muddy bottoms and dense aquatic vegetation. This peaceful, schooling species feeds on small insects, algae, and organic matter. Males display a brilliant cherry-red coloration, especially during the breeding season, while females are generally larger and more subdued in color. Due to its striking appearance and calm nature, the Cherry Barb is one of Sri Lanka's most famous endemic aquarium fish and is exported worldwide for the ornamental fish trade.
