The Wilpita Rasbora is a small freshwater fish endemic to Sri Lanka, known only from a limited range of freshwater habitats in the island’s wet zone. It inhabits clear, shallow streams with slow to moderate water flow, sandy or gravel bottoms, and areas with aquatic vegetation and leaf litter. This peaceful schooling fish usually moves in small groups and feeds on small insects, insect larvae, tiny crustaceans, and other microscopic aquatic organisms. Due to its restricted distribution and dependence on clean freshwater habitats, the Wilpita Rasbora is considered an important species for the conservation of Sri Lanka’s unique freshwater biodiversity. It represents the remarkable diversity of small endemic fishes found in the island’s forest streams.
