The Sri Lanka Elegant Carplet is a small freshwater fish endemic to Sri Lanka, found in the clear, slow-flowing forest streams of the island’s wet zone. It prefers shaded habitats with leaf litter, submerged roots, and dense streamside vegetation, where the water is clean and well oxygenated. This peaceful schooling fish is known for its graceful swimming and attractive golden-orange body coloration, making it popular among aquarium enthusiasts. It feeds on small aquatic insects, insect larvae, zooplankton, and other microscopic aquatic organisms. Due to its restricted distribution and dependence on undisturbed forest streams, the Sri Lanka Elegant Carplet is considered an important species for the conservation of Sri Lanka’s unique freshwater biodiversity.
