The Asoka Barb is a freshwater fish endemic to Sri Lanka, found mainly in clear streams and rivers of the island’s wet zone. It prefers shallow, fast-flowing waters with rocky bottoms, submerged vegetation, and shaded areas provided by surrounding forests. This active species usually lives in small groups and feeds on algae, aquatic plants, small insects, and other tiny organisms found among rocks and stream vegetation. The Asoka Barb is recognized as an important component of Sri Lanka’s native freshwater fish community, and its survival depends on the protection of clean, unpolluted river habitats.
