Olive Barb

Systomus sarana (Puntius sarana)

The Olive Barb is a freshwater fish native to Sri Lanka and is one of the larger barb species found in the island’s rivers, streams, reservoirs, and lakes. It prefers a variety of freshwater habitats, including slow-moving rivers, deep pools, and areas with sandy or muddy bottoms. This active and powerful swimmer often moves in groups, especially when young, and feeds on algae, aquatic plants, small insects, crustaceans, and other organic matter. The species is valued as a food fish in some regions and plays an important role in Sri Lanka’s freshwater ecosystems by contributing to the balance of aquatic food chains. Unlike many Sri Lankan endemic barbs, the Olive Barb has a wider distribution across South Asia.
