Tire Track Eel

Mastacembelus armatus

The Tire Track Eel is a freshwater fish native to Sri Lanka and other parts of South Asia. In Sri Lanka, it is found in rivers, streams, reservoirs, marshes, and slow-moving freshwater habitats with muddy or sandy bottoms. It prefers areas with submerged roots, aquatic vegetation, rocks, and other structures where it can hide during the day. Although it is called an eel, it is not a true eel but belongs to the spiny eel family. This elongated, snake-like fish is mainly nocturnal and spends much of the daytime buried in mud or hiding among vegetation. At night, it becomes active and uses its long snout to search for prey. Its diet consists of small fish, aquatic insects, insect larvae, worms, crustaceans, and other small aquatic organisms. The Tire Track Eel plays an important role as a native freshwater predator in Sri Lanka’s aquatic ecosystems. Its unique body shape and behaviour make it one of the most interesting freshwater fishes found in the island’s rivers and wetlands. Conservation of clean freshwater habitats is important for maintaining healthy populations of this species.
