Ceylon Swamp Eel

Monopterus desilvai

The Ceylon Swamp Eel is a freshwater fish endemic to Sri Lanka, found mainly in swampy wetlands, marshes, rice fields, slow-moving streams, and muddy freshwater habitats. It prefers areas with soft mud, dense aquatic vegetation, and shallow waters where it can hide by burrowing into the substrate. Although it resembles a true eel, it is not a true eel but belongs to the swamp eel family. This secretive and mostly nocturnal species has an elongated, snake-like body and is well adapted to life in low-oxygen environments. Like some other air-breathing fishes, it can take in atmospheric oxygen, allowing it to survive in stagnant waters and temporary wetlands. It usually remains hidden during the day and becomes active at night when searching for food. The Ceylon Swamp Eel is a carnivorous species that feeds on small fish, aquatic insects, worms, crustaceans, and other small organisms found in muddy habitats. As a species found only in Sri Lanka, it represents the unique freshwater biodiversity of the island. Protection of wetlands, marshes, and natural freshwater habitats is essential for the conservation of this rare endemic fish.
