Congaturi Halfbeak

Hyporhamphus limbatus

Family: Hemiramphidae

The Congaturi Halfbeak is a small surface-dwelling fish native to Sri Lanka, found in coastal waters, lagoons, estuaries, and freshwater areas connected to the sea. It can tolerate a range of salinity conditions and is often found in calm, shallow waters with aquatic vegetation and floating plants. Like other halfbeaks, it has a distinctive elongated lower jaw that forms a beak-like structure. It is an active schooling fish that spends most of its time near the surface, where it feeds on insects, plankton, algae, small crustaceans, and other tiny organisms drifting in the water. The Congaturi Halfbeak is an important native fish in Sri Lanka’s coastal and freshwater transition zones, connecting aquatic food chains between rivers, wetlands, and estuaries. Conservation of lagoons, wetlands, and clean waterways is essential for protecting this species and its habitat.
