Largesnout Goby
Awaous melanocephalus
Family: Gobiidae
The Largesnout Goby (Awaous melanocephalus), known locally in Sinhala as බලි වැලිගොව්වා (Bali Weligovwa), is a species belonging to the Gobiidae family that inhabits freshwater streams, rivers, and brackish estuarine waters across Sri Lanka. As part of the Gobiidae family, it features two distinct dorsal fins and fused pelvic fins underneath its body that form a specialized pelvic sucker disc, allowing it to anchor securely onto rocks and riverbeds in flowing currents. True to its common name, the species is distinguished by a noticeably large, prominent snout and a wide mouth. To blend seamlessly into sandy and pebbly substrate, its body is covered in cycloid scales and displays a brownish, mottled pattern with dark blotched patches.
