Bar-eyed Goby
Glossogobius giuris
Family: Gobiidae
The Bar-eyed Goby (Glossogobius giuris), known locally as මහා වැලිගොව්වා (Maha Weligovwa), is a widespread freshwater and estuarine species in Sri Lanka belonging to the Gobiidae family. True to its family traits, it possesses two separate dorsal fins and fused pelvic fins that form a sucker disc, allowing it to stay anchored on river bottoms. It is easily distinguished by its elongated body, depressed head with a large, deeply cleft mouth, and prominent eyes situated high on the head that often feature a distinct bar-like marking through or beneath them. Typically displaying a yellowish-brown or olive coloration with dark irregular blotches along its sides, this predatory goby actively hunts small fish and invertebrates along sandy, muddy, or pebbly substrates in rivers, lagoons, and streams.
