Stone Goby

Sicyopterus griseus

Family: Gobiidae

The Stone Goby (Sicyopterus griseus), known locally as මහා ගල් වැලිගොව්වා (Maha Gal Weligovwa), is a freshwater goby belonging to the Gobiidae family that inhabits clean, fast-flowing streams and rivers with rocky substrates. In line with its family, it features two separate dorsal fins and specialized fused pelvic fins that form a strong pelvic sucker disc, enabling it to securely anchor onto boulders and stones even in rapid currents. It is characterized by its stout body, a broad, rounded snout with a subinferior mouth adapted for scraping algae off underwater rocks, and a brownish to grayish body often marked with faint dark vertical bands. This herbivorous, bottom-dwelling species thrives in well-oxygenated hill country streams where it feeds primarily on benthic diatoms and microalgae.
