Green Panchax / Dwarf Panchax
Aplocheilus parvus
Family: Aplocheilidae
The Green Panchax, also known as the Dwarf Panchax (Aplocheilus parvus), known locally as කලපු හඳයා (Kalapu Handaya), is a native freshwater and brackish-water fish of Sri Lanka and Peninsular India. Unlike the endemic Aplocheilus dayi and Aplocheilus werneri, A. parvus occurs naturally in both Sri Lanka and India. In Sri Lanka, it is associated with sheltered freshwater and brackish-water habitats, including small streams, rivulets, tanks, and other quiet waters with abundant aquatic vegetation. It is a small, active surface-oriented fish, reaching about 6.3 cm in maximum recorded length. It feeds on small aquatic organisms, including insects, and is particularly useful in controlling mosquito larvae. It is not a seasonal killifish, meaning its life cycle does not depend on temporary pools that dry out completely. The species is currently assessed as Least Concern (LC) globally.
