Mountain Loach

Acanthocobitis urophthalmus

The Mountain Loach is a small freshwater fish endemic to Sri Lanka, inhabiting clear, fast-flowing streams and rocky rivers, particularly in the island's hill country and wet zone. It prefers well-oxygenated waters with gravel, pebbles, and rocky substrates, where it remains close to the stream bed and takes shelter beneath stones or among crevices. This bottom-dwelling species is well adapted to swift currents, using its slender body and broad fins to maintain its position on the riverbed. It is generally solitary or found in small groups and feeds on insect larvae, small aquatic invertebrates, algae, and organic matter scraped from rocks. Its cryptic colour pattern provides excellent camouflage against the streambed, helping it avoid predators. As a species found only in Sri Lanka, the Mountain Loach is an important component of the island's endemic freshwater fauna. Because it depends on clean, unpolluted hill streams, it is vulnerable to habitat degradation, deforestation, pollution, and changes in natural river flow, making the conservation of forested catchments essential for its long-term survival.
